God and Military Service

For the longest time, Christians in the military confused me. I always wondered why they would choose military service when one of the 10 commandments is do not murder. Simply put, there is a difference between murder and killing your enemy while in the military. It really comes down to why your country is fighting. There are many examples in the bible where God tell his people to conquer and destroy other nations. How king David came to power. How the Israelites were supposed to get their promised land. etc.

Now I believe that fighting in defense of your country from invasion is obviously fine with God. It the same concept of defending your home from invaders. Its when your country is attacking another that you have to think, should I be fighting with them.We should not blindly follow our country into war. I believe that if the reasoning behind your countries fighting is just, then its perfectly fine to go to war in that countries military. In other words, if the actions of you country are contradictory to the bible and its commands and morals, then you should refuse to support it in any way. Although, an obvious message of the bible is peace. And our leaders should look for peaceful solutions even when war could be legitimately justified. That being said, being in a branch of service is a great honor and responsibility. To be able to protect your country and/or serve in war is worthy or respect and honor to those brave enough to do it.
